Required Core Courses for the Degree (17 credits)

  • IGD 601 – Re-Thinking Global Development (4 credit hours)
  • IGD 602 – Innovation for Inclusive Development (4 credit hours)
  • IGD 603 – Methods for Research in Global Development (4 credit hours)
  • IGD 604 – Colloquium in Innovation in Global Development (2 credit hours)*
  • GTD 505 – Research Design in Technology and Development (3 credit hours)

*Students are required to take IGD 604 once for two credits as a core course requirement.  They may take it one additional time for two more credits that can be used toward electives.

Elective or Research Courses (55 credits)

Students may choose elective courses from applicable courses in the following areas based on interest and committee approval:

  • School for the Future of Innovation in Society
  • College of Public Service and Community Solutions
  • W.P. Carey School of Business
  • School of Human Evolution and Social Change
  • School of Sustainability
  • School of Politics and Global Studies
  • Thunderbird School of Global Management

Other electives may be used with approval from the academic unit. Students admitted with a conferred master’s degree applicable to the IGD PhD program may be granted a blanket of 30 credits toward the 55 required elective credits.

Culminating Experience (12 credit hours)

IGD 799 Dissertation
