Variable Worlds: Design for the World We Invent

Variable Worlds: Design for the World We InventClaire Evans will facilitate a workshop with SFIS that uses the tools of tabletop role-playing games to generate an entirely speculative world -- rolling the dice to determine variables like social hierarchy and environmental toxicity. Participants will break into small groups and try to understand our world, and what it might need from us, before regrouping to collectively process how our new world might have come into existence as a consequence of actions and consequences in the here and now—determining the core “radical discontinuity” between this variable world and our own. Our finished ideas can take the form of products, tools, or stories. The exercise will be prefaced with a discussion of speculative fiction as a critical lens, sharing how Evans incorporate these tools into her own creative practice.
