HSD PhD student Barbara Whye balances her degree program with the responsibilities of being the Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer/VP of Human Resources. Whye was recognized for her achievements several times in 2015. Currently, her research is directed toward improving access to technology careers for diverse talent by creating opportunities in STEM and ecosystem development.
Diversity MBA magazine named her one of its “Top 100 Under 50 Emerging Leaders,” while STEMConnector.org acknowledged Whye (formerly McAllister) as a “Rising Star” in its “100 Diverse Corporate Leaders in STEM” blog series. She was featured in the #ilooklikeanengineer social media campaign, which aimed to highlight diversity within the Intel Corporation. Last but far from least, the Society of Women Engineers honored McAllister with the Spark Award, granted as a nod to her mentoring activities.
Not content to rest on her laurels, Whye continues to work tirelessly. She partnered with a fellow team of researchers to publish an Intel MakeHER research report called: “MakeHER: Engaging Girls and Women in Technology through Making, Creating, and Inventing” last year. She was also published by STEMConnector.org and the US Chamber of Commerce Foundation and mentioned in a USA Today article. Even with her studies and her executive responsibilities, McAllister maintains her personal blog, upandmoving.com.
Whye’s “belief in STEM’S ability to fuel innovation, empower women and underserved youth, and transform lives” is at the heart of her continued drive and success. Asked why she felt driven to return to education so far into a successful career, Whye said, “I am passionate about continuous learning.” Her interest in responsible innovation led her to hear about the HSD program. “That led to me meeting Clark (Miller) and he really inspired me to apply for the program full time. The rest is history.”
