Innovation Talk with Nicolas Rasmussen

In this talk I reconstruct in previously unavailable detail the 1980s race to clone and market what would be biotechnology’s most important product to date, erythropoietin or Epo, and follow that scientific contest into the courts deciding competing patent claims to the natural protein drug.  I argue that through case law in the new domain of recombinant DNA, the US courts imposed a de facto policy that shaped the business and scientific environment of small biotechnology firms so as to narrow research effort and assimilate the sector to the established pharmaceutical industry.

Libraries have historically supported and engaged scholars, educators, learners, and the curious with books, maps, videos, and more. In the United States, many libraries have also promoted equitable access to information, which has presented challenges in this digital age, including how to bridge the connectivity gap and how to build digital collections to enable multiple ways of learning, knowing, and experiencing the world.

Human Dimensions of Tidal Energy Technology and Development

Tidal energy is a renewable energy source that could be used to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and help meet renewable energy goals set by governments. The technology needed to extract this energy is in the early stages of development and views towards this technology and energy source are not well understood. In this talk, I will discuss current research on the human dimensions of tidal energy technology and development, with an in-depth look at acceptability, support, and perceptions of tidal energy in Washington state.
