Jieshu is a Ph.D. student of Human and Social Dimensions of Science and Technology (HSD) program in SFIS at ASU, originally from China. She is interested in the social dimensions of emerging technologies, especially Artificial Intelligence (AI). She is also interested in how innovations grow out of social network structures. In college, she was trained as a civil engineer, minored in economics, and also has a Master's degree in civil engineering, focusing on underground engineering and tunnel construction. In addition, she has a postgraduate diploma in Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC). She worked as a patent examiner in the Patent Office of China and then an editor and new media manager in a popular science magazine before she co-founded a media company focusing on AI. In 2016, she came to the U.S. to pursue her M.A in Communication, Culture, and Technology (CCT) program at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. During that time, she did some research on the history of AI, AI and the future of work, AI and semiotics, etc. and wrote her thesis about the ethics of AI-driven facial recognition technology (FRT). She writes articles and book chapters about sci-tech and also translates English sci-tech books into Chinese.
