What is political about sustainability research?
In the current epoch of unpresented environmental change, science is expected more than ever to contribute to solutions for the challenges that societies face. Yet, by actively engaging in processes of societal change, researchers encounter the deeply normative and political dimensions of sustainability problems and potential solutions. In this talk, these normative and political dimensions of sustainability research are explored based on a survey completed by 284 researchers participating in international research platform ‘Future Earth: Research for Global Sustainability’. The talk will identify different attitudes of researchers towards these questions, as well as some deeply entrenched ideas about science and its role in society.
