It’s Alive! Frankenstein at First Friday
200th anniversary of the tale about creating a monster speaks to challenges of innovation today Victor Frankenstein’s creature will make an appearance at First Friday in Phoenix, along with Mary Shelley — the author who brought the scientist and his monster to life. They — or, rather, actors in their guise, will be present courtesy of the Arizona State University Frankenstein Bicentennial Project, which is examining the intersection of science, innovation and society as illustrated by the story of Frankenstein..
It’s been 200 years since Shelley’s iconic tale first explored questions of scientific creativity and responsibility. Yet this enduring, modern myth speaks to many contemporary concerns about synthetic biology, artificial intelligence, robotics, and climate engineering.
Fascinating ideas drawn from the novel and updated for contemporary audiences will be on display at the School for the Future of Innovation in Society’s “Future of X” display at the First Friday in Phoenix on October 6. The School (commonly referred to SFIS) is sponsoring an enlightening performance with actors portraying Mary Shelley and the creature interacting with each other and the audience.
Family friendly, hands-on activities to capture the imagination will also be available for spectators and participants. SFIS will produce Future of X events at each First Friday Phoenix through May, portraying aspects of the School’s research in ways that are accessible to the community and invite public participation.
