A crosscutting, interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program, HSD provides an intellectual core for students while encouraging them to work with other vibrant programs at ASU. Students will find natural connections to the schools that house HSD faculty. There are two or more faculty members participating in the program from each of the following:
School of Politics and Global Studies
The school is home to approximately 50 Ph.D. students in Political Science. They specialize in the fields of American Politics, Comparative Politics, Political Theory, and International Relations. Global Studies is also developing a Ph.D. program.
School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies
From the multiple disciplinary approaches of history, philosophy and religious studies the school investigates those matters that most make us human—mind, rationality and morality, spirit, and memory; the current areas of strength include: history and philosophy of science, intellectual history and history of philosophy, American and global religious history and cultures, environmental history and bioethics, women’s history and feminist philosophy, Native American history and indigenous epistemologies, history and philosophy of politics and the quest for justice; history, philosophy and politics of religion.
School of Human Evolution and Social Change (SHESC)
SHESC is building on a strong tradition in Anthropology at ASU to create a wider community of scholars in the life sciences, social sciences, and humanities who are developing revolutionary new approaches to anthropological questions of compelling contemporary import.
School of Letters and Sciences
The school provides foundational instruction in humanities, social sciences, mathematics, sciences and professional fields for both the Downtown Phoenix and Polytechnic campuses of ASU. Senior graduates students in HSD may have opportunities to teach in this unit.
School of Life Sciences
Established in 2003 with the merger of three existing academic departments–Biology, Plant Biology and Microbiology–SoLS focuses on excellence in interdisciplinary research in the life sciences.
School of Social Transformation
The school has groups of scholars in African & African American Studies, Asian Pacific American Studies, Justice & Social Inquiry, and Women & Gender Studies.
